The Resurrection of Evania James by Jaime Jo Wright Blog Tour and Book Review

I cannot think of one thing I did not like about this book. Of course, this author is one of my go-to reads and I’ve read all but one of her books.

The premise of this tale is back in 1879 the James family inhabited the James Mansion … back in the day, the James family was a prominent one and Father, as he is not-so-affectionately called, was a wealthy man. But … where did his wealth come from is the question. He had two daughters, Evania and Eloise, and a deceased wife (the girls’ mother). Evania stepped out of what would be deemed appropriate behavior in the day and terrible things happened. So much so that she was shipped off to an asylum, to which Eloise did not agree. In Eloise’s ventures (again stepping out of appropriate behavior) she meets Silas who himself is of a dubious nature, or so it seems. Let me just say that Father was not happy with Eloise’s behavior. The more Eloise and Silas asked questions, the more they discovered and the more they discovered …

Fast forward to present day and we meet Tilly Thompson and Grandpa Don. Grandpa Don suffers from Alzheimer’s and I have to say the author’s portrayal of this devastating disease … so spot on. Anywho, Grandpa Don purchased James Mansion for Tilly with a couple stipulations to which Tilly agreed because James Mansion … well, it was James Mansion after all. Enter Erik, Tilly’s brother. Enter Luke, a long-ago crush of Tilly’s. Enter … the walls talking. And the mansion’s secrets revealed.

I was intrigued by the chapters that are simply called: If Walls Could Talk. The secrets they could tell!

To me, once again, this author has absolutely nailed the details, the intricacies of James Mansion’s walls and how they revealed their secrets, Grandpa Don’s illness, the discovering of the truths of what laid behind the walls for so many decades. The ghostliness and the hauntedness of the James Mansion.

I would have to say that this is my second-most favorite book of this author … not to be outshined by The Vanishing at Castle Moreau which is the first book I read by this author.

If you like ghostly hauntings and secrets from long-past being revealed, pick up Evania’s story. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

The Bone Woman by Paige Shelton Book Review

What intrigued me about this book was the colorful cover. And, I enjoy this author’s writing. This one is so much different than her Alaska Wild series.

We are introduced to Hazel Dylan, daughter of Wilmot Dylan who was a taxidermist. I don’t know that you find many taxidermists these days. Anywho … because of her father’s chosen profession, Hazel developed an interest in bones … thus, her neighbors of Black Vulture dubbed her “the bone woman.”

Mysterious bone sculptures started to appear where they shouldn’t be.

Hazel was called in by local law enforcement to help them age the bones. Pretty creepy scenario.

They even went so far as to call in an expert from another county. Graham.

Sonny entered the picture. Hazel’s reaction to him, having been alone most of her life, led me down a path … following breadcrumbs.

Minnie’s podcast comes into play, which Hazel reused to listen to.

Some of Hazel’s past comes into play.

Some truths are revealed.

For me, there are also a couple of cliffhangers. You’ll have to read the book to find out what they are. I suspect this may lead to further adventures for Hazel. Or maybe not. Maybe we are all going to be left wondering.

I find it interesting that there are people who are able to find out so much information about bones. Kind of puts me in the mind of the TV show Bones, with Temperance as the bone expert.

I also enjoyed the fact that this tale was told in Hazel’s voice and the voice of the whodunnit; personally, I didn’t see that one coming. The whodunnit’s voice added just the right touch of sinisterism, at least for me. I also tend to enjoy books that are told in the main character’s voice; I think it adds a personal touch.

Maybe You Lied by Jennifer Sadera Blog Tour and Book Review

I am not an emotional reader. I don’t get attached to characters. I read because I like to read. Perhaps sometimes I will chuckle or think something is a good character trait that adds realism.

Not so in this case.

Due to personal circumstances, I found myself relating to Will a lot. I almost had to stop reading. I’m glad I didn’t so I could find out the meaning behind the title of this tale, but the description of what Will was going through grieving his mother hit somewhere that was much too realistic, at least for me.

Basically, Will lost his mom three years ago in a horrific accident. Now he is in the midst of a lawsuit. He finds a deed in amongst some paperwork, the deed to a rundown shack (as it turns out) on some rich dude’s property. While there, and trying to figure out why his mom never said anything, let alone working on getting his own life together (Will is very young at 21), he meets Penelope. He also meets her father, Robert. He also is dealing with his attorney, Alan.

Here’s my take on these characters:

Will – a young man trying to figure out his own life, having to make some ‘grown-up’ decisions. He describes himself as socially awkward and has no clue what to do or what to say. Totally relatable character traits and they come across so well on these pages.

Alan – Will’s attorney and he wants to guide Will to make certain decisions, much to Will’s irritation. Alan also has a facial tic when he gets stressed. As ‘irritating’ as that tic may have become, it makes Alan very relatable. There is so much more to Alan’s character.

Penelope – theoretically, a spoiled rich girl. She’s not really. Not with a father like Robert. She is also described as moving fast, even just pacing a room.

Robert – a very controlling man.

Janice – Will’s mom.

Mac Moriarty – he’s not a very nice man.

Will, Alan, and Penelope are the main characters throughout this tale, and all those above-described traits make them very relatable. I also liked the fact that this story was told in Will’s voice throughout.

This is a tale of finding the truth and discovering what the ‘lie’ was all about – the why behind it. A story of grieving loss on many levels, of forgiveness, of relationships gone awry for various reasons, of learning how to move on when the one person you could count on is no longer around. Again, this story hit me personally on many levels.

Three Steps Behind by Dani Pettrey Blog Tour and Book Review

This is book three in the Jeopardy Falls series.

Things I enjoy about this series:

Jeopardy Falls – a small town with seemingly big-city problems.

Greyson and Riley – their relationship is going strong.

Deckard – he’s the leader of the pack, so to speak, but in this ‘episode’ he is struggling with how he feels about Harper. It makes him ‘real’ and it makes him vulnerable.

Harper – freshly back from Syria and who does she run to for comfort and help when things go south for her?

Christian – he doesn’t play as large of a role in this tale.

Bristol – Deckard, Christian, and Riley’s sister. We finally learn more of her story.

Enter Aubry, the FBI dude who has been chasing Bristol for her past crimes. These two, Aubry and Bristol, made for an interesting read. I suspect book four (sadly, it seems like that will be the last in the series) will reveal more of what’s going on between these two unsuspecting characters.

The other thing I like about this series is the quiet way in which each character, in their own way, seeks God for comfort, even the toughest of the tough of them.

And, since this sort of falls into the romantic suspense category, I like the attraction characters develop between each other, the uncertainty they feel when that happens, and the vulnerability they each have for different reasons. Ultimately, as a reader, I get more caught up in those things than I do the actual ‘crime’ they are trying to solve.
