It's News To Me by R.G. Belsky Book Review/Blog Tour

I received a gifted copy and am providing a review.

This is the first book I have read by Mr. Belsky and my first introduction to Clare Carlson. This is book 5 in The Clare Carlson Mysteries.

Clare Carlson is the news producer for Channel 10 News. Clare has a propensity, as a news reporter, to chase stories … even to her detriment. She has a need to get to the truth of her stories, such is the case with Riley Hunt. It is not a spoiler to say that Riley Hunt was the victim from the get-go of this tale. Clare finds herself also dealing with a huge management change at Channel 10, losing her mentor, who was replaced by Ms. Endicott. It is Ms. Endicott’s job to hike up the ratings for Channel 10 News, so she put Clare on-air once again, and expected her to deal with her duties as news producer as well.

Clare finds herself doing what she loves … chasing the story, asking questions to find out what really happened to Ms. Hunt. She finds herself meeting some interesting characters and stirring up trouble with all her questions. Clare’s friend, Janet, is also always trying to set her up with someone, feeling that Clare needs a relationship which only adds to the personal aspect of Clare’s life. Just when you think you figured out whodunnit - plot twist!

Clare is a three-time divorcee so is not an expert on relationships by any means. She also tends to ignore what is happening in her personal life using her defense mechanisms - humor and burying herself in her work - making her an extremely relatable character. I very much enjoyed reading about her adventures in It’s News To Me. I  was quite entertained with the characters in this story, and Clare’s antics.

The Perfect Brother by Chris Patchell Book Review/Blog Tour

I received a gifted copy and am providing a review.

Amar Saraf is a professor at a university. Indira is his sister, who specializes in writing code - the particular code she is writing gathers geodata. Indira struggles with this for various reasons.

Mallory is a student at the university and works at a local coffee shop where her path crosses daily with Tim. Katie Lord goes missing. Katie also happens to be the fiancée of Tim.

Brock Sinclair - a student who attends the same university and wants more from Mallory.

Rani and Falguni - a daughter and a mother. Complicated relationship.

Amar and Indira, Rani and Falguni come from a culture that still believes in arranged marriages. This is how Amar and Rani become engaged, much to Amar’s disappointment and Rani’s giddiness. Rani is a complicated lady; she shows absolutely no emotion. Amar makes the mistake of getting involved with Mallory. While he does not have tenure, it’s still a bad idea but the two of them cannot ignore their attraction. Katie Lord’s disappearance rattles cages. The obvious suspects are questioned.

Something terrible happens to Mallory and Amar is the prime suspect. In steps Indira who refuses to give up on her brother. Enter Dylan, Indira’s boss. Enter Jason, a beat cop. Enter the geodata, as the saying goes: “Data doesn’t lie.” While Indira wants to believe in her brother’s innocence, she cannot dismiss what the data shows. The stress of Amar’s situation lends to her parents’ distress. Her mom is not well, and her dad’s business suffers. Rani comes up with a plan to which Amar agrees.

I don’t want to give too much away, but if you’re looking for a new author in the “crime thriller” genre, give Ms. Patchell a shot.

This book shows that finding new authors can be a pleasant surprise. This book trapped me when I first started reading it and for a 400-plus page book, I was done within a week. I enjoyed all the unexpected twists, the family bonds, the broken relationships, the story itself, the link between our geodata and the information it can provide, even if we don’t even think about it. If you’re looking for a book you can curl up with, give this one a try.

Death in a Dark Alley by Bradley Pay Book Review

I received a gifted copy and am providing a review. (Not my picture.)

This is book two in the Spectrum Series, book one being The Killings Begin. In this book, we are taken through the past history of some of the characters we met in book one. We find out how Lydia and Mari met. We meet Frank and learn about his history, his troubled past, his relationships. We meet Isabella and how she had a friendship with Frank. We also find out the struggles of Isabella and what she does to survive when she strikes off on her own. Frank takes Isabella on a trip to meet his Uncle Victor; Isabella and Victor have their own story. And we meet a whole host of other characters.

We get just a bit more of the relationship between Tracey Lauch and Charlotte, and some of their travel adventures. Tracey is a wildly captivating man, but he has a darkness to him. Personally, I want more of Tracey’s story, what makes him tick, the reason he does what he does, the meaning behind his triggers. What makes Charlotte so special to Tracey?

Sanctuary by C.L. Tolbert Book Review/Blog Tour

I received a gifted copy and am providing a review.

In this tale, you will meet some very relatable, vivid characters. This was the first time I’ve been introduced to Emma Thornton, attorney and law professor, along with her significant other Ren and her twin boys, Billy and Bobby. You will also meet Stacey who finds herself in the midst of being accused of a crime - that being the death of James, the leader of the Japaprajnas. You will also meet his wife, Cecelia, and Mira who has a son with James and is also involved with the Japaprajnas.

The Japaprajnas temple is supposed to be a place where people can find, if you will, sanctuary. These folks come from all walks of life, and Stacey’s “job” was to recruit those who were homeless, on drugs, or trying to escape from a bad situation. These folks were put to work either in the massage parlor in the back of the temple or at the smoke shop owned by James and Mira, with the proceeds supposedly going to the temple. Some of the girls were put to work in the back room of said shop and, surprisingly, Moonshine, who manned the front of the store, didn’t know what went on in the back room, or did she? Of course, Moonshine has secrets of her own that she wants to keep buried.

This tale is full of suspicious deaths, drugs, money, a temple that isn’t all it seems, and, to keep things interesting, there are a couple of twists that you won’t see coming. A traditional whodunnit set in the heart of New Orleans.

Fallout by Carrie Stuart Parks Book Review/Blog Tour

I received a gifted copy and am providing a review.

Clan Firinn is a place specifically designed to help law enforcement personnel gain back the physical, emotional, and spiritual selves after seeing some of the tragedies they encounter. Clan Firinn was founded by Beatrice and Dr. Brun, Dr. Brun being the on-site director and Beatrice being somewhat of a mystery. One such guest of Clan Firinn is Dr. Dutch Van Seters who, after being a client, stayed on as an advisor. You’ll also meet Scotty and Leroy. Being such a place, imagine Samantha’s (Sam) surprise when she finds herself staying there, even temporarily, after a tragic accident occurred at the school she was teaching at.

Coincidentally, Sam meets Mary after the accident at the school who befriends her and offers her a place to stay. Something happens at the Airbnb which is the reason both she and Mary ended up at Clan Firinn. Mary is looking for her missing husband as well as wanting to be an aspiring writer. A couple of things happen at a construction site that lead Sam to start asking questions, to start putting the pieces together. Sam does not trust easily, but she finds herself trusting Dutch and through her questioning Dutch begins to have questions of his own. All these questions lead them down a path neither one of them were expecting. The question is how do all the answers tie into Sam’s life … most especially her past.

This tale, as the title would suggest, has more to do with an incident that happened years ago. Through Sam’s questioning, perseverance, and some misadventures, she finally finds the answers she went looking for. There are also quite a few smaller interconnecting stories intertwined throughout these pages that keep the reader turning pages to find out what really happened and how they all come together.
