I am not an emotional reader. I don’t get attached to characters. I read because I like to read. Perhaps sometimes I will chuckle or think something is a good character trait that adds realism.
Not so in this case.
Due to personal circumstances, I found myself relating to
Will a lot. I almost had to stop reading. I’m glad I didn’t so I could find out
the meaning behind the title of this tale, but the description of what Will was
going through grieving his mother hit somewhere that was much too realistic, at
least for me.
Basically, Will lost his mom three years ago in a horrific
accident. Now he is in the midst of a lawsuit. He finds a deed in amongst some
paperwork, the deed to a rundown shack (as it turns out) on some rich dude’s
property. While there, and trying to figure out why his mom never said
anything, let alone working on getting his own life together (Will is very
young at 21), he meets Penelope. He also meets her father, Robert. He also is
dealing with his attorney, Alan.
Here’s my take on these characters:
Will – a young man trying to figure out his own life, having
to make some ‘grown-up’ decisions. He describes himself as socially awkward and
has no clue what to do or what to say. Totally relatable character traits and
they come across so well on these pages.
Alan – Will’s attorney and he wants to guide Will to make
certain decisions, much to Will’s irritation. Alan also has a facial tic when
he gets stressed. As ‘irritating’ as that tic may have become, it makes Alan
very relatable. There is so much more to Alan’s character.
Penelope – theoretically, a spoiled rich girl. She’s not
really. Not with a father like Robert. She is also described as moving fast,
even just pacing a room.
Robert – a very controlling man.
Janice – Will’s mom.
Mac Moriarty – he’s not a very nice man.
Will, Alan, and Penelope are the main characters throughout
this tale, and all those above-described traits make them very relatable. I
also liked the fact that this story was told in Will’s voice throughout.
This is a tale of finding the truth and discovering what the
‘lie’ was all about – the why behind it. A story of grieving loss on many
levels, of forgiveness, of relationships gone awry for various reasons, of learning
how to move on when the one person you could count on is no longer around.
Again, this story hit me personally on many levels.
