Outage by Mike Trigg Blog Tour and Book Review

This was certainly different than my usual read. I wasn’t disappointed.

This was a pretty fast-paced read, which is something I enjoy.

Essentially, Caleb has left his family due to some unknown factor to them. Rachel and their children, Austin and Derek, are left with a weapon, cash, and a note. In his note, Caleb tells Rachel that she will know what to do. She will? Rachel’s inner thoughts are spot-on in her thinking throughout these pages. On one hand she is mad at Caleb for leaving the three of them to travel this unknown path on their own, and on the other, she’s worried about Caleb and if he will survive whatever it is he has done.

On their path to find Caleb, the three of them experience things they never would have in a ‘normal’ life. Unspeakable things.

The premise of this tale is there has been an outage of the internet and communication services, and no one seems to know why. And that is the underlying question throughout this tale - why.

Austin is what I would describe as a technology junkie, so she has a basic understanding of what’s going on, but not entirely. I could see her eyerolling at some of Rachel’s questions.

Derek … he is a pretty straightforward kid whose personality enhances Austin’s. At least that was my take.

There were, of course, some shootouts involved.

There was a hint of politics (in a broad sense of the term) where Jago Teague was concerned. He’s the power player in this tale.

Caleb … oh, Caleb. You should have just told Rachel the truth from the get-go and saved yourself the grief.

And Chay, he was certainly an unexpected character who has a great sense of right and wrong.

I enjoyed the author’s writing style, which happens to be in Rachel’s voice, first person. I enjoyed reading about the unknown path Rachel, Austin, and Derek were led down, and the whole premise of an internet/communication outage? Quite interesting, I thought. I also liked the fact that even though Rachel had no clue about what she was doing, her main instinct was to protect her children at all costs. Again, she, Austin, and Derek faced some unspeakable situations on their quest to find out what happened.
