I first read Throwing Shadows and was introduced to Sheila and Hank, characters I enjoyed.
Sheriff Hank Worth – married to Maggie, an ER doctor, who
shows up when she is least expected at crime scenes.
Maggie – she was called to testify against some bad dudes,
which of course puts anything Hank does for his job under suspicion.
Duncan – Maggie’s dad. He certainly adds just the right bit
of character to this series.
Sam and Brenna – wedding plans abound! Dealing with Brenna’s
take-charge mama provided a bit of a chuckle. She just wanted her daughter to
have a special day.
And my favorite character … Sheila. The trial is finally
underway. There are some county politics involved. She is a force to be
reckoned with. And the vandalism. Sheila lives in a community where she is
still fighting being a Black woman working in a position of authority, that of
working for the sheriff. It’s not right, but it adds so much realism to her
character. Tyrone, Sheila’s husband, is a pillar of strength for Sheila. Sheila
is also not afraid to ‘take on’ dudes who tower over her. She may be small in
stature, but she is mighty in her position. The one thing I missed, not to take
away from the story, is the banter between Hank and Sheila, perhaps it was due
to the ‘stress’ of all that was going on in their personal and professional
lives.
There are quite a few smaller stories intermixed with the
bigger story. Hank is dealing with a crime that involved the owner of the Reel
Life bait and tackle store. A new owner bought the place, but you’ll never
guess why and you’ll never guess the whodunit. The new owner’s name is Gene.
And he had an out-to-get-him soon-to-be ex-wife. She added some color to this
tale.
To recap – The trial. The wedding planning. Oh, and the boat
chase near the end! Wait until you read where that ended. There’s also the
young kid Gursey … I suspect there is more to his story.
