This is book 1 in the Soldiers in Shadows series.
Do you like a book with a bit of romance between two unsuspecting
characters? Check.
How about a bit of family dysfunction? Check.
What about a young girl running from the bad guys with an FBI team
protecting her? Check.
And how about some misplaced trust between FBI partners? Check.
Sully finds himself partnered with Piper. Their mission was to
protect Ollie who was set to testify against some really bad dudes. This led
them to ending up at Broken Chains Ranch, which was run by Sully’s cousin, Maya.
It is a very appropriate name for this ranch as they provided second chances
for veterans who found themselves displaced. Of course, Maya said they could
bring Ollie to the ranch as a safe haven.
Sully meets Elena. You can guess what happens there. They just
didn’t know what to do about it. Not only that, but Elena was facing her own
troubles dealing with her own family that were very close to the ranch, but
they couldn’t escape. I liked the fact that there was attraction, but not so
much it distracted from the danger they were involved in.
I enjoyed this tale with all its dysfunction and its smaller
stories leading to bigger stories mixed in. I liked the female characters as
they all have an inner strength that shines through, even the women on the bad
side of this tale. I enjoyed reading about Elena’s quest for the truth and her
reuniting with her family, even if it didn’t end up the way she was hoping.
And Ollie? She got some really good news at the end of the story.
It will be interesting to see what Sully and Elena find themselves
mixed up in next.
